Promotes academic excellence and innovative thinking

The Maths and Science Academy program engages and inspires students by embedding inquiry based learning, problem solving and STEM activities into the curriculum. Students are provided with opportunities to enhance and develop their maths and science learning, build leadership skills, work productively in teams and establish links with the community.

Features of the Maths and Science Academy Program include:

  • Unique field trips which allow students at each year level to apply their knowledge and skills outside of the classroom.
  • Maths and Science Academy classes work with inspiring university mentors and visiting scientists who help students to discover the ‘real’ science behind the curriculum.
  • Students are provided with opportunities to participate in debating and speech competitions such as the 4-Way Speech Contest.
  • Robotics units are integrated within year 7 – 9. These classes provide a highly engaging medium for creativity and critical thinking. The robotics units develop student skills as they participate in activities such as Lego robotics and working in partnership with KIOSC using VEX robotics, Sphero and NAO.

In Year 10 students are actively involved in the INTERACT program where they work closely with Rotary to complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts the students develop leadership skills and learn the value of individual responsibility and hard work.

The industry internship at Year 10 gives students real life experience in a workplace environment to further develop skills such as problem solving and team work. Students are presented with a specific project relating to the allocated work place which they complete with the support of their industry mentors.

In Years 11 and 12, students have additional classes in English, Maths and Science to build a deeper understanding and draw connections in their learning. Students are also encouraged to extend themselves through university enhancement programs.
