2018 Literature Festival

On Monday 20th August to Friday 24th August we held our Literature Festival on campus at Rowville Secondary College. It was a brilliant book week welcoming Author’s Scot Gardner, Declan Fay and Tristan Bancks to the college.

Scot Gardner is an Australian author who has written many books for young people. He is a storyteller and performer with a great sense of humour, students were laughing throughout his talk. He talked about how he writes and where he gets ideas for material for his books “I think we have an obligation to ourselves, our loved ones and future generations to tell it like it is,” says Scot. Scot presented to our year 7s (at the West) and year 8s (at the East) and gave a writing workshop to selected students which they thoroughly enjoyed!

“On Tuesday the 21st of August author Scot Gardner visited the year eights. He spoke about his life and how he creates inspiration — by walking and writing throughout ‘Stick Road’, as he called it. He told an hilarious story about how a grass seed got stuck in his eye, and how he takes those stories and creates them into realist fiction. He used humour to connect with the students, and overall couldn’t stop putting smiles on their faces. He’s published so many books and uses a great method to write — handwrites in long form then speaks to the computer, letting the computer type for him. An excellent option for those who cannot write too fast on a keyboard. Gardner spoke about anything and everything in the short time he was there, and hopefully he could visit us again in the future.” Allanah Major, 8Q.

Declan Fay visited us on Wednesday 22nd August at the West where he talked to all year 9’s and held a script-writing workshop in the library. Declan Fay is one of Australia’s leading comedy writers and motivational speakers, who has performed at the Comedy Festival and The Fringe Festival. He is an award winning writer who has written for a range of TV shows such as Rove, Dirty Laundry Live, and the kids TV comedy You’re Skitting Me. He also co-created and co-wrote the ABC Comedy Ronny Chieng: International Student. Declan has hosted numerous radio shows on Triple R, Triple J, and MMM. He has spoken at over 600 different schools around Australia.

Leading up to book week, we also had the privilege of Tristan Bancks the author of ‘Two Wolves’ the book that our Year 7s are currently reading as their English text visit us.  Tristan talked to all of our Year 7s in the PAC for the afternoon. Our students were very impressed, here’s what they had to say:

“During the author talk with Tristan Bancks, he talked about stories from his childhood, how he used them as a foundation and linked these to writing his books. I liked his exciting story about his ‘accidental’ appendix removal. Everyone found it extremely interesting and funny, including me.”  Ella, 7P

“It was an honour to meet author Tristan Bancks. He talked about ‘Two Wolves’ the book we are reading in Year 7, his other books and how it linked to what happens in his life. He gets his inspiration writing on what is outside. He talked about what happened when he was a child. Tristan also was an actor. He acted in the movie ‘Beneath Clouds’. We really had a good time.” Elena 7P

Throughout the week, students also enjoyed trivia, games, snacks and some delicious cake at lunchtime in the libraries.

A big thank you to our wonderful library staff for organising such a fantastic week.
