Our Sports

Rowville sports academy

Basketball

Basketball was one of our foundation sports offered in 2008. The program is run by head coach Dean Kinsman and his experienced coaching team who have all either coached and/or played in national competitions (i.e. WNBL, National Championships, etc.). We are proud of the basketball program we have developed which has assisted multiple RSA students to attain US College scholarships and led RSA teams to state and national titles.

Cricket

Cricket is one of eight sports currently offered at RSA. The program utilises first class indoor facilities at Icon Arena as well as outdoor local municipal facilities near the school and occasionally facilities at Dandenong Premier Cricket Club’s Shepley Reserve. Former state and international cricketer and coach Darren Berry is the Director of Coaching and is supported by Assistant Coaches to conduct the program. Darren utilises his significant network of cricketing acquaintances to add value to the program in various ways. Like all of the RSA sports, the program is predominantly a development program in which elite and emerging cricketers can strengthen their batting, bowling, wicket keeping and fielding craft as well as their mental and tactical skills. They also access athletic development and strength and conditioning programs under the over sight of RISE Health Group’s highly qualified exercise scientists. Squads from each of our age groups participate in the School Sport Victoria competition, friendlies often against high performing private schools and annually in the World Schools Cricket Challenge.

Soccer

Our soccer program was first offered in 2008 and several of our RSA soccer students have gone on to represent Australia and received professional contracts. The program is run by head coach Ian Greener and his very experienced coaching team including ex-Perth Glory Assistant Coach Stuart Munro and Victorian State Coach Bobby McLachlan.

Golf

Our golf program was also offered in 2008 based at Sandhurst Golf Club. In 2013 we strategically formed a partnership with Waverley Golf Club which allowed us to move our training base to a premier private golf course located closer to campus. The program is run by head coach Tim Wendel and his coaching team who work with students at both an individual and small group level to give each student the best chance of development.

Netball

Netball was first offered at RSA in 2009. Our program is run by Former Australian Netball representative Erin Bell. The appointment of a person with such a stellar background in netball continues the RSA tradition of backing in up and coming star coaches. Our inaugural coach Kristy Keppich-Birrell reached the pinnacle coaching in the National Netball League as the inaugural coach of Collingwood Magpies and her RSA replacement Kate Upton has in 2019 taken on the role of Assistant Coach at the Magpies having worked part between Rowville and Collingwood over the last two years. Erin’s move into the coaching arena in a school environment is not unexpected. She has been preparing for work in schools studying in the areas of sport science and physical education. Erin is renown for her technical capabilities as well as her strong communication and relationship building.

Australian Rules

Our Australian Rules program was first offered in 2013 and has received great interest in its early years. The program was developed by Mark Oraniuk who has extensive experience in elite talent development, while ex-AFL player and Eastern Ranges coach Darren Bewick runs the program. Although the program is in its infancy, we believe we are offering talented players an elite development pathway to ensure they reach their potential.

Tennis

The tennis academy launched in 2017 and is headed up by level three high performance coach, Adrian ‘AJ’ Muscillo. AJ is one of only 70 level three high performance tennis coaches in Australia, where he has spent time at all major international academies and has worked with Tennis Australia and Tennis Victoria. He is an internationally-renowned coach, having won the 2015 Coaching Excellence – ANZ Tennis Hot Shots award at the Newcombe Medal, and was named the 2014 Victorian Coach of the Year.

Volleyball

Volleyball was also first offered in 2013 and is run by head coach Peter Bundy and his team. Peter has over 30 years of coaching experience including coaching state teams and teams in the AVL and VVL. Our volleyball training is primarily conducted on-campus at the recently opened Rowville Sports Precinct, however off-campus sessions are still conducted at Dandenong Stadium, the home of Volleyball Victoria.
